Eric and Tracy Smythe have been trying unsuccessfully to have a child for years. When Eric tells Tracy about a pregnant woman he has met who is willing to give up her baby for adoption, though, their hopes soar. The Smythes arrange to adopt the soon-to-be-born baby of Gabby Paige, and Gabby even moves in with the Smythes until the birth. After the birth of Sarah Louise, though, Gabby changes. She demands a substantial payment of money or she'll change her mind as she can do under the law and demand her baby back. She also claims that Eric was more than someone who she just met.

When Gabby is found murdered and Tracy suspects Eric has had something to do with it, Tracy turns to Police Detective Nick Hanford, who she previously met when their cars bumped into each other, for protection. But Detective Hanford isn't all that he pretends to be, and his protection turns into a kidnapping of both Tracy and Sarah Louise. Eric comes to Tracy's rescue, but in the end it is Tracy who courageously saves her family in the final battle.
